A Tale of Two Fireplaces

Living Room Fireplace
Our house actually has three fireplaces, but we've never used the one in the basement, which is stuffed full of some weird red-tiled, wood-burning stove. We love having two fireplaces on the first floor, one in the living room and one in the dining room. The living room fireplace (despite a non-functioning flue) is the nicer of these two. It has an attractive bit of brick surrounded by a fine wooden mantle.


Dining Room Fireplace
The dining room fireplace is a different beast. Ridiculously awkward tongue-in-groove boards surround a fireplace covered in some kind of white stuff, which covers up (according to the previous owners) fake brick. We want to improve this fireplace if at all possible, but we won't figure out the price of any improvements until we're well into this project. So this may or may not be part of the step four of our project.
