Day Nine: Joists for the Kitchen
Not sure if this posting will work tonight, and I'm a bit tired, so this will be quick.
During lunch today at the Tick-Tock Diner at 8th Avenue and 34th in New York City, I gave Dave a call and learned about today's progress at the house. The big news was that they hadn't begun to tear out the bathroom yet, so we definitely have another day's worth of showering. But tomorrow the ceiling gets torn out of the bathroom.
Once we made it home, we quickly cleaned everything out of the bathroom, leaving only the towels on the racks, the roll of toilet paper, and a handful of toiletries for tomorrow. The third floor is getting increasingly more crowded, but we've set up the bathroom so it can work--though we don't yet have the corner shower rod I ordered.
Dave also told me today that the left wall of the kitchen now needs to be removed to allow for six-inch joists for the panel box. This is yet another surprise removal, which Dave followed up quickly by telling me that the ceiling in the second-floor hallway will need to be removed as well.
Dave also reported that Chris had made some progress with the wiring, and when we came home we discovered that he'd simplified the wiring situation a little bit and that he had added temporary outlets for the washer, the dryer, and the stove.
Here's what we else we found when we arrived home.
Where There is No Longer a Set of Rickety Basement Stairs
The basement stairs are totally gone, and the basement looks big and beautiful without them.
The Half-Bathroom, Almost Gone
The toilet and sink have been removed from the half-bath in the basement, but some of the pipes are still there, and one of the remaining pipes is leaking slightly.

The floor joists that will help extend the kitchen are in place, and the new kitchen is coming together.
The Strange View of the Back Door from the Basement
The back door is still attached, but it is now buried behind the new joists.
