Day Fifteen: Everything Gone
Another day for a lightning post. I got home late from work, then we had to pick up Nancy and Tim's new eyeglasses, then Tim and I put up the corner curtain rod in the third-floor bathroom, and finally I took I sit-down shower in that tub since I don't think the whole family will have time to shower in the morning in this new setup.
The Microwave Range Hood Added
We also stopped at Sears and picked up our microwave range hood. We now have bought all the appliances we need for the kitchen, since there's no way we're going to buy a new refrigerator right now.
The New and Old Electrical Services Sharing the Back of the House
The big news today is that our new electrical service has been half-installed. It looks pretty good on the back of the house, and much nicer than the messy old service. We are now thinking of re-siding the house after all this work is done. It's the only way the back of the house will look reasonably good.

With the new wiring for the service outside, we also have this new electrical both inside. It's huge (about three and a half feet tall) and has spaces for 40 switches within it. I talked to Chris today about the electrical problems we need changed, so he knows I want to replace as much old knob-and-tube wiring as possible, disconnect the electrical connections to the fireplace sconces, move the subpanel a bit more out of the way, and lots more. I'm trying to get as much done with the plumbing and wiring as we can during this project.
A Colorful Pail of Wire Scraps
Here's a beautiful pail of wire scraps Chris created today. He also seems to have started to diminish the quantity of messy wire in the house. But our digital phone service is still out, and we still don't have lighting in the basement or the stairs from the first to the second floor.
The Double-Beamed Ceiling of the Kitchen
Today, John and Dave put in these beams (the light-colored ones) right beside the weak old beams (the dark ones). They just didn't trust our old dry beams to hold up the bathroom above it.
Two Reasons Why We Can No Longer Use Our Shower
The big news today is that our shower is disconnected. These pipes used to direct water to our shower. Now they do nothing. It's a bit sad seeing our shower but not being able to use it, but we'll make do.
Where We Used to Have a Kitchen Sink
We also lost the kitchen sink today, and this is where it used to be. We now don't have running water on the first and the second floors.

This new sink was a surprise. It is not our old sink (which was a double-basin sink), but they've set this one up for us screwed to a little stand so that it drains through flexible tubing into an open drain.
Our Washing Machine and Dryer Gone Under Cover
The plumber Tom is not as neat as our carpenters. He dribbled solder over my tools, left a cabinet sitting in water he made, left his scraps scattered on the floor, and left dirt all over Nancy's new washer and dryer. So I covered the washer and dryer tonight.

Tom has this set of plastic tubing set up hanging from the ceiling of the basement. For now, it seems to feed the washer with water.

This is some of the new copper wiring Tom installed in the basement. It's quite attractive.
The Corner Shower Rod Set up in the Third-Floor Bathroom
Tim's and my project for the night was to set up this rigged-up shower in the third-floor bathroom. The curtain rod seems to have worked well, but the shower curtain is a little too long for this setup. Also, we had to staple plastic to the wall, and that will end up being annoying. But the shower works. I used it tonight.
Today was weird. The place was left much messier than usual, maybe because of the new guys or maybe because there were so many guys here. We have now hit the "get worse before it gets better" part of the job. Oh, and Chris has somehow reconnected our security light in the alley so that it's on again at night. Too bad we don't want that to happen, because the cost of running that is so ridiculously high.
