Day Sixty-Four: Return to Forever
Just back from New York City and Erin's graduation today. First, we spent some time talking to Dave and John, and finding out what had transpired in our absence. Then we had to go shopping for a few things for our party tomorrow and paint for the wall. After returning home, we started to neaten and straighten the house for the party tomorrow, which was quite time-consuming since the place is quite dirty from three months of renovation. I was up until 1:30 am, painting the bottoms of the walls so that John can put up the molding tomorrow.
The New Thermostat, Towel Rack, and Toilet Paper Holder
Here's one set of new things we found back at the house. The thermostat is pretty neat, and I'm relieved to see it. I thought maybe people forgot to put up the wiring for the thermostat--since I thought this wiring was for the light in the shower. The towel rack is quite stylish, and we like it. But best of all is the toilet paper holder. We just flip up its bar to load and unload the holder. There's no annoyance with squeezing the bar short to put it in the holder.
The New Lights in the Bathroom
The big news today is that we have light in the bathroom and the kitchen for the first time in months. One nice feature here is the separate light for the shower. Thank goodness we also have the light/fan unit, since we still don't have vanity lights, and we forgot to call the lighting place today to see what's going on with that order.
The Threshold between the Kitchen and the Dining Room
Dave says no-one can trip over this threshold, but I have my doubts. It's a beautiful little threshold, though it does point out the awfulness of our old flooring.
The Sconces Almost Back in Place
The guys almost set our sconces back in place in the dining room, but they were held up by having to put some plaster within the corners of the hole they cover. The problem is that the sconces don't quite cover the hole. In other sconce news, we had to go out and buy two sconces for our first floor hallway, something we didn't know until this week. (We found some, luckily, at a hardware store, since I don't want to wait for fixtures from the lighting store to come in.)
The New Rug in the Hallway
While out at the hardware store, Nancy decided that we needed to get a rug to cover the unfinished wood in the hallway. We found this one, which we really liked, and it pretty much fills up the space.
The New Light and Smoke Detector in the Second-Floor Hallway
One other change was the addition of the new light in the second-floor hallway. The one you see here is bit larger than the new light we got for the stairway to the basement. The smoke detector here is supposed to be a CO detector as well, but it appears to be identical to the detector on the first floor. Unfortunately, there was no detector on the third floor, despite my confirming with Chris yesterday that he was putting one up there. He appears to think the second floor is the third floor. I blame the basement for that, another floor that doesn't have a hard-wired detector I expected.
The Kitchen Essentially Set
And here is our beautiful kitchen, essentially perfectly ready for use. We ran the dishwasher today, and it was beautiful. Nancy also tried to run the washing machine, but water poured out the back and was caught in the catch basin underneath. I couldn't figure out what was causing water to pour out the back and bottom of the machine, so that's one of my things to call George about tomorrow.
